Blues from the Dirty South (Africa)…

The Pretty Blue Guns “Pills” Music Video Launch featuring Machineri at Zula, 26 June 2010

The irony of the Zula gig only occurred to me much later that night, as I watched Sannie Fox belting out her delta blues growl through the venue’s sub standard PA. Ghana kicked the USA’s ass in the football and now South Africa was kicking some serious American Blues ass too… Africa 2 – North America 0

Machineri are blues, they are rock n roll and they are definitely dirty. I first met Sannie when she was in Black Betty and I have since watched her evolve in her incarnations of the band under different guises. Machineri is the first time I’ve seen her truly at home on stage and it reflects through the music she makes with lead guitarist Andre Geldenhuys. Summoning the spirits of Howlin’ Wolf, Robert Johnson, Janis Joplin and Jimmi Hendrix they had the audience eating out of their hands from the first chord, capturing the drunken footie fans in a broken-heart ballad and leaving the hungry crowd’s encore chant sadly unanswered…

I would just like to send a shout out to the Yankee douche bag, with the sunglasses on (indoors, at night) and the Stars and Stripes despondently draped around his shoulders, who took it upon himself to storm the stage in the middle of Machineri’s set and wax lyrical about the USA’s loss and South Africa’s gracious hospitality. FAIL! This is not Jerry Maguire; you didn’t have us at Hello, get off the stage!

Much to my anticipation, The Pretty Damn Awesomes, I mean The Pretty Blue Guns, graced the stage at the strike of midnight after the screening of their music video for “Pills”. The video was created byAdriaan Louw and Luca Vincenzo, beautifully shot, and featuring the band with their posse, in a solarised montage of a typical night in/out in the life of a band…

With a solid blues foundation, the Guns conjure a fusion of The Doors, Rolling Stones, The Kills, Black Keys and Kings of Leon; with the love child of Jim Morrison and Julian Casablancas on lead vocals, Andre Leo, who also produced the one-liner of the night “Thanks for coming out, because of you we can make albums and music videos without putting our faces on fucking KFC boxes”. Swigging whisky from the bottle between each song; the end of their set drew nearer with a crescendo, creating a tequila fuelled choir of friends and fans for “Devil Do”, leaving Zula’s bouncers in a state of confusion trying to decide who should and shouldn’t be on the stage… hells yeah, now that’s Rock n Roll!
